Sariska Tiger Reserve sits in the rugged Aravalli hills of Alwar district, Rajasthan — a landscape of dry deciduous forest, rocky ridges, and scrub-covered valleys that once served as the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Alwar. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1978, Sariska is spread across roughly 850 square kilometres, with a core zone of about 500 square kilometres. It sits approximately 200 kilometres from Delhi — a comfortable 3 to 4 hour drive via NH-48 — and just around 110 kilometres from Jaipur, making it one of the most accessible tiger reserves from either city and an easy weekend escape.
Sariska's own story is part of its appeal: the reserve lost its tigers entirely to poaching by 2004, and its population today is the result of one of India's most closely watched big-cat relocation programs, which began in 2008 with tigers translocated from Ranthambore. Arrival & Afternoon Safari
Delhi / Jaipur → Sariska
Depart Delhi early morning via NH-48, arriving at Sariska by early afternoon after a 3 to 4 hour drive (or a shorter 2 to 2.5 hour drive from Jaipur). Check into your resort or forest lodge and have lunch. In the late afternoon, head out for your first jeep safari through Sariska Gate into Zone 1, 2, or 3 — the golden hour before sunset is often the most active time for wildlife movement in the Aravalli scrub. Return to the resort for dinner and an overnight stay, with the option of a bonfire evening depending on the property. Overnight at Sariska.
Morning Safari, Ganesh Temple & Departure
Sariska → Bhangarh → Delhi / Jaipur / Onward
Rise early for a second jeep safari at first light, when the forest is at its coolest and quietest and wildlife activity tends to peak. Return to the resort for breakfast and check-out. Before heading back, drive to Ganesh Temple, roughly an hour away, to explore the atmospheric ruins of this abandoned 17th-century town — note that ASI regulations require visitors to leave before sunset. Begin the return journey to Delhi or Jaipur, arriving by evening.
