This North East tour package is built around Guwahati as the gateway city, with Shillong — popularly called the "Scotland of the East" for its rolling hills and colonial-era churches — and Cherrapunji forming the core of the itinerary, supplemented by the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki and Asia's cleanest village, Mawlynnong.
Guwahati, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, is the largest city in Assam and the practical starting point for almost all North East India itineraries. From here it is a scenic 3 to 4 hour drive up into the Khasi Hills to reach Shillong, at an elevation of roughly 1,496 metres, and a further drive south to Cherrapunji at around 1,430 metres. Meghalaya currently does not require an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, though foreign nationals should confirm current requirements before travel — the region's tribal-council-administered land and matrilineal Khasi culture give it a character distinct from anywhere else in India.

Cherrapunji and neighbouring Mawsynram hold among the highest recorded average rainfall on the planet, feeding a concentration of dramatic waterfalls — Nohkalikai Falls, one of India's tallest plunge waterfalls, and the multi-tiered Seven Sisters Falls chief among them. The limestone Mawsmai Caves and the region's dense sacred forests add a further layer of natural drama rarely found within a single short itinerary.

The Umngot River at Dawki is renowned for water so transparent that boats appear to float in mid-air, making it one of the most photographed river experiences in India. The double-decker living root bridge trek near Nongriat involves a steep descent of several thousand stone steps through rainforest and is best suited to travellers in reasonably good physical condition.

Shillong's compact town layout, gentle sightseeing circuit around Ward's Lake and Umiam Lake, and mild year-round climate make it comfortable for children and elderly travellers alike. Arrival at Guwahati & Transfer to Shillong
Guwahati → Shillong
Arrive at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, where your representative will receive you for the scenic 3 to 4 hour drive to Shillong. En route, stop at Umiam Lake (Barapani) for a short boat ride and photographs against the backdrop of forested hills. Check into your hotel in Shillong by evening, with the remainder of the day free for local sightseeing around Ward's Lake and the town centre. Overnight at Shillong.
Shillong Sightseeing & Dawki River
Full Day — Shillong / Dawki
After breakfast, visit Shillong Peak for panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills, followed by Elephant Falls, cascading in three tiers over fern-covered rocks. In the afternoon, drive to Dawki to experience the astonishingly clear Umngot River — a boat ride here is one of the most photographed experiences in North East India. Visit the India–Bangladesh border area nearby before returning to Shillong for the evening. Overnight at Shillong.
Mawlynnong, Living Root Bridge & Cherrapunji
Shillong → Mawlynnong → Cherrapunji
Check out and drive towards Cherrapunji, stopping en route at Mawlynnong, celebrated as Asia's cleanest village, to see its living root bridge and the balancing rock. Continue to Cherrapunji, checking into your hotel by early afternoon. In the evening, visit the Eco Park for views over the Bangladesh plains and the region's dramatic canyon landscape. Overnight at Cherrapunji.
Waterfalls, Mawsmai Caves & Departure
Cherrapunji → Guwahati
Begin the day with visits to Nohkalikai Falls and the Seven Sisters Falls, followed by exploration of the limestone Mawsmai Caves. Adventure-inclined travellers may opt for the trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat in place of one of the caves or falls visits. In the afternoon, begin the return drive to Guwahati, arriving by evening for your onward flight or train departure.
