Where the Mountains Test You, and the Beas River Cheers You On
Manali is a premier hill station and adventure tourism hub nestled in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, at an elevation of approximately 2,050 metres above sea level. Flanked by snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges, and threaded by the fast-flowing Beas River, Manali sits at the northern end of the Kullu Valley, roughly 40 kilometres from Kullu town, 270 kilometres from Chandigarh, and around 540 kilometres from Delhi — making it one of the most accessible high-Himalayan adventure destinations in north India.
Manali has earned its reputation as the Adventure Capital of North India, a title built on decades of trekking expeditions, high-altitude passes, and some of the most varied terrain available within a single day's drive. Key landmarks include the Solang Valley adventure park, Rohtang Pass, Hadimba Devi Temple, Old Manali's café lanes, the Beas River rapids near Pirdi and Jhiri, and the high-altitude meadows of Kothi and Gulaba. A Manali adventure tour package brings together paragliding, river rafting, snow activities, and mountain sightseeing into a single, adrenaline-charged travel experience.
Manali's credibility as an adventure destination rests on established infrastructure and regulation. Paragliding and zorbing operators at Solang Valley are required to be registered with the Aero Club of India and the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC). River rafting operators on the Beas run certified stretches between Pirdi and Jhiri under HPTDC safety guidelines. For travellers booking a Manali adventure package, it is advisable to verify that operators hold valid HPTDC or state tourism department certification — mountain and river conditions here can change quickly, and safety standards matter enormously.
For Adventure Seekers
Solang Valley, about 14 kilometres from Manali, is the epicentre of Manali's adventure scene — paragliding, zorbing, and (in winter) skiing and snow scooters are all available here against a backdrop of glacier-fed peaks. The Beas River between Pirdi and Jhiri offers Grade II and III rapids well suited to first-time and intermediate rafters. Rohtang Pass, at 3,978 metres, is the classic high-altitude excursion, offering snow activities for much of the year (subject to permits and weather). Adventure packages are best suited to travellers in reasonable physical health, and operators are required by Himachal Pradesh Tourism to maintain certified safety equipment and trained guides.
For Nature & Mountain Lovers
Manali's charm extends well beyond its adrenaline activities. The drive through Kothi and Gulaba reveals dramatic gorges and pine forests, while Old Manali's laid-back lanes — lined with cafés, Israeli food joints, and handicraft stores — offer a slower, more contemplative side of the town. The Beas riverside, particularly near Kasol road and Nehru Kund, is popular for quiet mountain walks.
For Families
Manali is comfortably family-friendly — Solang Valley's activity park has options suited to varying comfort levels and ages, Hadimba Temple's forest setting is an easy and atmospheric walk, and the Mall Road offers relaxed evening strolls and shopping. Family packages typically balance a couple of adventure activities with gentler sightseeing, keeping the trip enjoyable for both children and older travellers.

Tour Plan
Arrival & First Steps in Old Manali
Delhi / Chandigarh → Manali
Depart from Delhi by road or overnight Volvo bus, arriving in Manali by late morning after a scenic drive along the Beas River through Kullu Valley. Check into your accommodation and spend the afternoon settling into the town's rhythm.
After lunch, take a walk to Hadimba Devi Temple, set within a quiet cedar forest — a gentle, atmospheric introduction to Manali's mountain calm. From there, head into Old Manali, exploring its café lanes, handicraft stores, and riverside paths along the Beas. As evening sets in, enjoy dinner at one of Old Manali's mountain-view cafés. Overnight at Manali.
Solang Valley Adventure & Rohtang Excursion
Full Day in Manali
Start the day early with a drive to Solang Valley, about 14 kilometres from town, for the day's main adventure activities — paragliding over the valley with certified instructors, followed by zorbing and (seasonally) snow scooter rides against a backdrop of glacier-fed peaks. Depending on season and permit availability, continue onward to Rohtang Pass at 3,978 metres for snow activities and panoramic views of the Pir Panjal range — note that this excursion is subject to a valid entry permit and weather conditions, and may be substituted with an extended Solang Valley / Kothi-Gulaba excursion when the pass is closed. In the afternoon, travellers preferring water-based adventure can opt for a white-water rafting session on the Beas River (Pirdi to Jhiri stretch, Grade II–III rapids), while others may prefer additional time exploring Old Manali or the Mall Road. Overnight at Manali.
Mall Road, Local Sightseeing & Departure
Manali → Delhi / Chandigarh / Onward
Enjoy a relaxed morning with a final walk along Mall Road for last-minute shopping — Manali is known for its woollen shawls, local Himachali caps, dry fruits, and handmade wooden crafts. Optionally visit Vashisht village for its natural hot springs before checking out. Check out from your accommodation and begin the journey back to Delhi, Chandigarh, or your onward destination, arriving by late evening or the following morning depending on mode of travel.
